The continuing risk of security resulting from computer viruses has forced most PC users to invest in and run virus protection software.   While this is certainly a necessity, it is definitely not the only things that PC users can and should do to protect themselves.  Remember, it is not only your data that is at stake, for many people it is their total financial information and their identity that are at issue.

Another area of subject security breaches is your email.   If you are using one of the public email packages like Yahoo or Google then you have some security, since these systems filter all incoming messages.  The reputable ones also scan attachments and prevent installing or download ones that are a risk.   If, on the other hand, you are using an email package attached to your website, your concerns should be heightened. 

The reason for this is that email packages – especially one provided free as a part of other software – are often horribly insecure.  This means that you will have to provide all the oversight and screening to ensure your security from viruss threats.   If you do not recognize the sender, never open any email with an attachment – no matter who it is from.   This will prevent viruses and spyware from being launched as you read the attachment. 

The next category of virus and spyware risk is the content of the email message itself.  Just because a clickable element is in the body of the message and appears to redirect you to the vendor’s website is no guarantee that it will.  There are now malware senders who offer an enticing deal or product just to get you to click on a link in the message.   As soon as you click the link you will see a series of virus alert messages and suggested downloads.   These download alerts request permission to be accessed and a simple click launches the next series of threats.   These messages often appear to be coming from your operating system.  

Do not store unknown email messages or attachment-laden ones on your system for access later.   You are asking for trouble with anything that is unknown.  These are the kinds of simple things that can be of great value when it comes to protecting your PC and most of them can be done without impacting your daily routines.

Finally, you should endeavor to keep a clean and updated Windows Registry.  You can obtain good registry software that will scan, delete or replace invalid codes and other registry fix functions that complete Registry Repair.
