Abdominal migraine is a type of migraine that is found in children aged five to nine, moreusually girls than boys. Sometimes, adults also suffer with this type of migraine. The main differences between migraine and abdominal migraine is the age of onset and the lack of headache.

Migraine medications may be too strong for the young children who suffer from abdominal migraine.

The symptoms of abdominal migraine are treated with analgesics, sedatives and anti nausea medication, but the most effective treatment is rest. As with traditional migraine sufferers, the child needs to lie down to rest in a quiet, dark room.

As with many migraine sufferers, a child with abdominal migraine may be sensitive to some foods, which act as triggers. A good strategy for parents would be to eliminate known food triggers from the child’s diet to see if this helps. Some of the common triggers include dairy, tomatoes, artificial colors and flavors, manufactured meats, preservatives, citrus and chocolate. Over-tiredness, anxiety and stress are also common migraine symptoms.
